Dia de los Reyes
The Feast of the Three Kings also known as the Epiphany takes place on January 6th. The Epiphany is significant to our family for a few different reasons. First, we all love the story of the three wise men following a star to find the baby Jesus. So much mystery surrounds the event it is hard not to love it. Second, it is a popular holiday in Guatemala which makes it an important part of Eliana's cultural history. Third, some people believe one of the three wise men was from Ethiopia and frankincense is found Ethiopia. So it is an important part of Eldana's and Abigia's cultural history. Finally, the Epiphany kicks off the Carnival season which runs until Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent). Carnival is one of my (matt) favorite times of the year. The following pictures are from our celebration.
The Wise Men arrive...
the advent wreath is replaced by the 3 kings ...
crowns are made...
dinner is eaten... (thanks grandma)
King Cake!!!...
the baby jesus is found inside the king cake...
a king (or queen) is crowned...
Tomorrow we celebrate Ghenna (Ethiopian Christmas)! Who said Christmas was over? I will post pictures later.
