Slacker

Sorry it's been a whole week!
We've been really busy and it's late and I'm sleepy so this will be just a quick post.
- Last week we finally got our fingerprints done at USCIS. Now we're waiting for the SW to finish writing up the HS. I'm not really feeling all that impatient, believe it or not. It will all happen when it's supposed to happen.
- Last week we made a little change in our request for placement. We increased the upper age limit to 6, so we'll be requesting 2 sibs under 6, either gender.
- Matt has been doing a great job at beginning to learn Amharic. I am hoping to get the motivation soon, too.
- Quick story from today:
I listen to talk radio all day while working, a mix of national and local shows. Mostly local.
Today I had to call up and ask to be on the air when the host told a little story about how he had seen a woman and a baby on the street who didn't look "American." "They looked Mexican." He immediately considered CALLING THE SHERIFF! For what? For nothing, for looking 'Mexican'! He thought, with no action or indicator on her part to say this, that they might be here illegally. Are you kidding me?
His producer then says, offering an alternative to the person being here illegally, " well, she might have been coming or going from the Mexican restaurant up the street, maybe she works there."
That's right. Because if she's not an undocumented worker then she MUST work at the Mexican restaurant. As a Mexican-looking lady, what other option could there be?
I was.... MAD.
I called. I pointed out, in a calm, non-stuttery voice, that not only were they profiling but they were also completely stereotyping this woman by assuming either of these things about her. I educated them to the fact that just because she is LATINA does not make her a criminal nor a waitress. I told them about my wonderful daughter whose parents worry about how she will be perceived and treated in this community, in this political climate, during this immigration debate/debacle/issue.
What a bunch of garbage.

When I looked back on the pictures from this week I found out why we hadn't been blogging. Apparently we've been sleeping the whole time!

Good for you for calling that radio station and setting them straight. It's hard to believe that in 2007 some people are still so small minded and racist.

I love to read your blog, I am a total stranger but a Mother tiring to adopt a baby from Guatemala. We have our HS done, and are waiting for our appointment for finger prints. This is so scary what is going on, I couldn't image how I would feel if we had a referral.I'm upset now,and have been on the phone/fax/email this morning. I know God has a great plan for us all.
I would love to hear from families that are going through this. We need the support and I'm sure everyone else does too.
Our email is dmcguire100@windstream.net

Thanks

Thank you for calling that blowhole. My blood pressure is up just thinking about that moron. Only when people stand up for others will bigots learn to keep their big mouths shut.
